The Nightingale

for Choir and Orchestra

The Nightingale

The Nightingale is a song written for Choir and Orchestra that I composed during lockdown. It was originally written for a choral competition run by the Nightingale House Hospice based in my home town, Wrexham. The lyrics are adapted from a poem written by my Dad and have been translated into Welsh by Glenys Harris.

The opening piano motif is based on the chirpings of a singing nightingale, before developing out into a sweeping score. Much of the tonal language uses extended harmonies to create a lush musical landscape.

The song has been performed by NEW Sinfonia musicians, singers from the University of Manchester, and the Dee Sign BSL Choir. The audio and video was edited by Jon Guy Music, video coming very soon!

The song is currently written for Mixed SATB Choir, but will be available soon for Ladies Choirs and Male Voice Choirs in both Welsh and English with a piano reduction.
